The intestinal absorption of Vitamin B12 is more complex than the other B vitamins, involving acidic cleavage from Vitamin B12 carriers, binding proteins and intrinsic factor mediated intestinal absorption.
Due to this complexity in absorption, and relatively low amounts in processed foods, many individuals are functionally deficient in Vitamin B12.
What does Folate and Vitamin B12 do
Vitamin B12 is an essential vitamin involved in methylation reactions, fatty acid metabolism, DNA and RNA synthesis.
Vitamin B6 plays is involved in hormonal synthesis, neurotransmitter synthesis, and red blood cell metabolism.
Folate is and vitamin B12 work together in metabolic processes including the folate cycle and formation of S-Adenosyl-methionine (SAM), the principle methyl donor in the body. SAM is the principle methyl donor for multiple cellular reactions, including biosynthesis of proteins, neurotransmitters, hormones, phospholipids, creatine, and DNA methylation (1). In states of folate or vitamin B12 deficiency, SAM will not be activated for methylation reactions, leading to a decline in physiological function. This allows for a build up of homocysteine, which is a moderate risk factor for cardiovascular disease (2). Disruptions in the folate cycle can lead to decreased glutathione production, which is the body’s main intracellular antioxidant (1).
